New Year’s Resolution: Let’s All Live Beyond Fear

The visionary author Neale Donald Walsch writes that “There are only two energies at the core of the human experience: love and fear. This view is one I live my life by. With that said, we feel so many different, complex emotions in the course of our day and fear is one that shapes much of our lives. I think about my children, who came into this world as innocent little beings of energy and love. But at some point, they—in fact all of us—were wounded, betrayed, let down. I cringe at the role I played in this for their lives, but it is unavoidable. After we’re born, we each begin downloading information from our parents, our teachers, our environment, the media, and the society we live in. We begin to sense that we must somehow protect ourselves, not trust the world and as a result become afraid. As the contemporary spiritual teacher Marianne Williamson once said, “Love is what we were born with. Fear is what we learned here. . . . The spiritual journey is the relinquishment—or unlearning—of fear and the acceptance of love back into our hearts.”

What this all means to me is that fear is the greatest obstacle to being able to tune in to the powerful frequency of love. This includes the fear that has been programmed into us since childhood; fear that arises from our past wounds and betrayals; fear that we are inadequate or incapable or unworthy. Because love is the essential force in the Universe, fear is the counterforce. Because love will always vibrate at a higher frequency than fear, you can free yourself from fear by focusing on love, and you will be amazed by the creative power that is released within you, and how your life will blossom into what you hope it will be.

So this New Year’s eve, here’s a suggestion for a resolution. When you experience any situation that bring up feelings of fear, try to move to a place of love in your mind. You could imagine someone you love, your family, your children, a pet. You could re-live a memory of some experience which was so filled with love and good feeling that it literally changes your mood just by thinking about. When you do that, you have changed your energy from fear to love, from lack to abundance, and from creating the life you are afraid of to creating the life you dream of. Happy New Year, and may all your dreams come true!
